Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks said “It’s the people not like us that make us grow.” This is an uncomfortable thought. We spend our entire lives looking for people just like us so we can feel like we belong.

In another case of cruel irony, the rapper and singer contracted the coronavirus in July, a few months after telling her 7.3 million Instagram followers that Covid-19 was really no big deal: “You just take some Mucinex (a cold and flu medication) and drink water and tea and sleep,” she wrote in March. “That’s all you gotta do.” Please don’t heed this advice.

If you’re religious then hanging around an atheist seems “dangerous.” If you worship entrepreneurship then hanging around a lifelong 9–5 worker who is happy may seem stupid. The thing is you don’t need more people telling you what you want to hear to keep your ego satisfied. You need to disrupt your thinking entirely to grow.

I know that when I track my dreams, I’m more likely to remember them. I understand them better now, too. Looking back at my spreadsheet feels like gaining access to my subconscious fears and desires.

The fastest human on Earth didn’t let a global pandemic slow down his plans for an epic birthday celebration. Bolt threw a huge house party in August where — spoiler! — there was no evidence of social distancing. A few days later he tested positive for the virus.

When I first created this spreadsheet, I set up columns for each dream’s date, description, symbolism, contextual notes, and links to any research I dig up. I also track how long I’ve slept, what hours, and the quality of my sleep on the night I had the dream. Recently, I noticed a correlation between the food I consume and how vivid my dreams are — and so I added a column for that, too. (Turns out, when I eat fish, my dreams have much more detail.)
